Descending & Bike Handling Workshop
Scott, Cycle the Nation YouTuber and Epic21 ambassador is very keen on his descending and has very kindly offered to share his experience on a goodwill, complimentary basis
This is what Scott told us he would like to offer to those interested
“As a returning Epic21 rider, I would like to offer a complimentary and informal bike handling and descending session for interested participants.
The intention is to share knowledge, techniques, observations and personal experiences gained through many years of road cycling, endurance events and mountain descents of varying types.
This is offered entirely free of charge as a gesture to fellow riders and the Epic21 community and is not intended to be a professional coaching, instruction or certification programme.”
“Confidence Through Control: Descending & Safe Bike Handling Fundamentals
Many riders spend significant time improving their fitness but often have fewer opportunities to develop confidence and skills when riding at speed, descending mountain roads, uneven surfaces, cornering or dealing with unexpected situations.
This informal session aims to help riders improve their understanding of many aspects, such as -
⦁ Bike control
⦁ Road positioning
⦁ Cornering confidence
⦁ Braking techniques
⦁ Hazard awareness
⦁ Descending safety
⦁ Rider mindset
The overall objective is to help participants feel more comfortable, relaxed and in control when riding in mountainous or challenging terrain. Many experience aspects of fear, which in turn seriously affects not only their safety, but others around them - and also can lead to mechanical effects that exacerbate the problem. My intention is to hold a brief workshop to help alleviate this, to help riders descend safely with confidence and relaxation.”
This will be conducted at the start of the week (so on Sunday morning)
Practical Demonstration Element
“I intend for this to be done as a ‘rolling’ workshop, where we initially chat about essential aspects such as body position, road position and such, then to demonstrate on the move - all whilst observing each individual and offering advice on how to put everything into practice.
This would all be done on carefully selected roads that ensure safety is paramount, whilst both having sections to display and observe, but to pull over and chat without impeding traffic
Participants would always be encouraged to ride within their own abilities and comfort levels.”
Background
“The session would be delivered from personal experience gained through:
⦁ Multiple years of endurance and sportive cycling
⦁ Fast mountain descending in the UK and Europe
⦁ KOM achievements on notable descents
⦁ Participation in events such as the Fred Whitton Challenge, Struggle Events and many others
⦁ Experience producing cycling content focused on riding technique and mountain roads
This session is offered entirely on a voluntary basis as a contribution to the Epic21 community and to help riders gain confidence and enjoyment from their riding experience.”
